Syllabus: Failure mechanisms in metals. High-cycle fatigue phenomena. Estimation of fatigue life. Effects of various parameters on fatigue life. Stress concentrations and their effects. Cumulative damage assessment. Non-zero mean loads. Combined and triaxial loads. Analysis of fatigue fracture surfaces. Introduction to linear elastic fracture mechanics. Determination of fracture toughness. Energy methods of beam deflection. Euler buckling of columns. Thick cylinders and compound cylinders. Rotating rings, disk andshafts.
