Syllabus: A central theme for the unit is expressed as the question; "which factors affect the distribution and abundance of plants and animals?" This theme is followed through consideration of the following topics:" biological productivity in ecosystems; community structure; change and stability in ecosystems; " ecology of populations; population genetics; population dynamics; mechanics of evolution; speciation; and adaptive strategies.
