Introduction

The Graduate Entry Master (GEM) course emphasises the close integration of evidence based theory and clinical practice. Theory content is comprehensive and includes the physical, biological, psychological and social sciences. The course is composed of 15 units. One unit is completed prior to the commencement of the course, with eights units completed in the first year, four units per semester. The second year of the course has six units overall with three units per semester. Five of the units have a clinical practice component; progression from the first to the final clinical unit demonstrates an increase in clinical hours and complexity in learning. Clinical practice involves a range of community and hospital settings. Student will be involved in supervised practice by registered nurses when providing care of individuals/families/groups; all clinical practice is appropriate to the level of academic preparation.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

For Australian Residents, a bachelor degree in a discipline related to health care and a demonstrated academic ability at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level is required for entry to this course. Essential pre requisites include completion of a unit in human structure and/or function e.g. human biology, anatomy or physiology, at tertiary level.

Specific Requirements

Applicants will be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Note

Evidence of completion of a Senior First Aid Certificate is required before commencement of the course. A Criminal Record Screening Check must be completed prior to commencement of the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning will be assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is offered internally over two years full time study or equivalent part-time. Bentley campus will offer intakes in early January and July each year.

Course Organisation

The course comprises 16 units. One preliminary unit is completed after which eight units are completed in the first year, four units per semester. The second year of the course has seven units overall with four units in first semester and three units insecond semester. It can also be completed part time at one, two, or three units per semester. Five of the units have a clinical practice component; progression from the first to the final clinical unit demonstrates an increase in clinical hours and complexity in learning. Professional Recognition

The course has been designed to meet the accreditation requirements and competencies of the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia (NMBWA) to enable initial registration as a nurse. In order for students to be eligible for registration with the NMBWA as a Registered Nurse, students are required to complete the course within five years of commencing studies in this course.

Career Opportunities

Nursing features in metropolitan, rural and remote settings. The graduate nurse may be able to practice as a beginning practitioner, competent to practice in a variety of health care contexts.
