Introduction

The course is especially designed for practising mining, civil and geological engineers and mine and engineering geologists. It is also designed to be a preliminary course for those intending to enter the Master of Engineering Science in Mining Geomechanics program without the required honours degree. The units offered deal with modern methodologies and state-of-the-art in mining and mine environmental geomechanics. Students may develop into geotechnical specialists or become well-informed managers. Career paths for the geotechnical specialist include in-house specialists in mining and petroleum companies, consultants, academics, researchers and technical specialists for mining related organisations.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A four-year bachelor degree in engineering and two years of industrial experience, a degree in mining engineering and a Mine Managers Certificate of Competency, or a three-year bachelor degree, or a one-year Graduate Diploma in Mining and two years of industrial experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is designed to be a part-time course of one to two years. The mode of study is modular or block release type where students undertake four units (short courses) over an intensive three-week period. Using this format four short courses can be undertaken and examined in the three-week block. Only eight short course units may be offered in any calendar year.

Course Organisation

The course consists of eight units. These units are all taught within a block release format.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
