Syllabus: This unit addresses psychopathology through a thorough review of psychological disorders based on the DSM-IV-TR and the ICD-10. It includes consideration of predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating and protective factors. In addition, the unit addressessome of the more advanced psychotherapy skills and concepts that are required for working with complex client populations, including ruptures in the therapeutic alliance, defences, transference and countertransference. Such psychotherapy processes are linked to understanding the personality structure, developmental processes and psychopathology of the client, as well as the research on evidence-based practice.
