Syllabus: Atomic structure and the periodic table. Chemical bonding - ionic, metallic and covalent bonding - polarity and intermolecular forces. Chemical equilibria - ionic, acid base and complex equilibria. Acids and bases - polyprotic acids and titration curves. Covalency and molecular stereochemistry, Lewis structures, hybridisation and resonance. Valence shell electron pair repulsion theory. Oxidation and reduction, electrochemical cells, reduction potentials and the Nernst equation. Introductory organic chemistry - hydrocarbons, functional groups, isomerism, organic reactions and polymers.
