Syllabus: Indian Ocean region to the 16th century with particular emphasis on South Asia. Patterns of trading and cultural interaction. The Indus Valley Civilisation and the coming of Aryans. The rise and expansion of Hinduism and Buddhism in South Asia. The rise of Islam and its impact on South Asia. The region on the eve of European colonisation.
