311152 v.1 Applied Statistics Major (Bachelor of Science)

Introduction

Statistics concentrates on the scientific application of mathematical principles to the collection, analysis, and presentation of numerical data for informed decision making in an environment of uncertainty. Statisticians may be found in just about everyarea of endeavour. They may be required to design surveys and experiments; collect, process, and analyse data; and interpret the results with the goal of describing and understanding variation in real world phenomena, from areas as diverse as agriculture, biology, environment, finance and economics, engineering, medicine, public health, psychology, marketing, education, and even in areas within the humanities such as linguistics. This major includes theoretical and practical units that will cover the development and application of statistical methods and probability models, and the use of popular statistical and data analysis packages.
