Introduction

In this course students can specialise in the Community Development Practice major or Social Policy major. Both majors provide students with experience and/or interest in these fields of work with a recognised and highly valued professional qualification. The Community Development Practice major develops an appreciation of community development theories and practices informed by a diversity of critical theory. Specialised knowledge in community development and the 'use of self' in professional practice are discussed, along with an exploration of working with various communities and the importance of context. Combining reflection on work in the field with an appreciation of a range of theoretical frameworks, personal awareness and ongoing experience contribute to a critically reflective practice. The Social Policy major is designed for those from diverse backgrounds seeking to develop an advanced understanding of social policy and practice. It provides an opportunity to explore theoretical approaches to the study of social policy and the skills to analyse and participate in policy making in a wide range of settings.
