Introduction

This degree prepares students to teach children aged zero to eight years in early childhood centres and in junior primary classes. The teaching profession and quality teacher training programs in particular have become a universal focus for the sustainability of our society. Teaching continues to be a valued and sought after profession in all countries. In accordance with this philosophy, Curtin provides a high quality undergraduate course for beginning early childhood teaching that is acclaimed both nationally and internationally. In addition to carefully selected local practicum placements, this course also provides opportunities for international internship, 'country' field experience and an honours' pathway. Curtin is proud of its highly qualified and experienced Education staff who provide a vibrant and contemporary learning environment.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

None.

Note

The Department of Education requires all Early Childhood Education students to pass a literacy and numeracy competency test in the first year of the degree. These tests comprise of spelling, essay writing and knowledge of mathematics content appropriate to early childhood teachers.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is four years full-time study. Part-time study is negotiated on an individual basis.

Course Organisation

This course includes professional practice units and optional units. Core studies are undertaken with optional units and electives during the third and fourth years of the course. Support units cater for the different needs of tertiary students. In consultation with a course advisor, students may select sequenced pathways designed to support and enrich individual knowledge and skills. In third year students are selected for the honours program or continue with the standard stream.

Professional Recognition

This course is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification.

Career Opportunities

Graduates are qualified to seek employment in the state and independent systems of education. Some also seek alternative settings and related industries.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and readers and other essential carefully selected study materials.
