Syllabus:

The most common aquatic contaminants are studied - aquatic contaminants classification, effects of contaminants on aquatic biota, physiological effects at the organism level and effects at the population levels and community levels. Laboratory toxicologyand endpoints measured - Effective Concentration (EC) 50, NOEC, etc. Field toxicology, biomarkers and bioindicators. Finally the knowledge is integrated by presenting case studies where the theory is applied to real-life scenarios. The practical portionof the unit is composed of a mixture of tutorials and laboratories. Students will design environmental monitoring plans, learn basic laboratory techniques - standard curves, protein determination, and biomarker analysis.
