Introduction

This course provides graduates with detailed knowledge and understanding of core areas of mining engineering in addition to advanced knowledge in selected areas of study. It is suitable for those who wish to gain specialist knowledge in mining engineering and for graduates currently working within the mining industry who wish to significantly upgrade their knowledge with a view to furthering their careers in this field. This is achieved by attendance at lectures, seminars and group discussions or by equivalent external study, and the preparation and submission of a thesis-based research project. Accordingly, this course is offered as a part-time full fee paying course, as well as on a full-time basis.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Minimum entry is a three-year Australian recognised degree in mining engineering or closely related discipline with a credit (65 per cent) average or above in the final year. Applicants with other qualifications and experience may only be admitted with the consent of the appropriate senior academic.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning will be assessed on an individual basis. Applicants holding a Graduate Diploma in Mining (Curtin) or a BEng (Mining Engineering) can expect up to 100 credits of recognised prior learning.

Duration and Availability

This full fee paying course is three semesters (18 months) full-time equivalent, available by part-time, external or full-time study.

Course Organisation

Students will select 300 credits of course and project work to complement their educational background and career aspirations, after consultation with and approval by the course coordinator. Units may be selected from the list of generic special units and projects (see below) offered in the core mining engineering subjects and from other appropriate units offered within Western Australia School of Mines Graduate Diploma or Masters courses. Instruction in the special units may take the form of tutorials, together with supervised reading and practical work. Students are required to do one or more project units equivalent to approximately one third of the course credits in consultation with academic staff. Project units may involve both field and laboratory work and all will require the submission of a written report and or dissertation.

Career Opportunities

Career paths for mining professionals include in-house specialists in mining and chemical companies, consultants, academics and researchers. Graduates can expect to obtain employment within these sectors or to further their current careers in mining engineering within the minerals industry.
