Introduction

Electronic arts do not simply present technical challenges, they create a range of new conceptual, linguistic and philosophical problems requiring solutions that feed upon the expertise and experience of educators, media practitioners, creative artists, visual thinkers, hardware and software engineers, architects and mathematicians. Electronic arts has the potential to build bridges across divided areas of study to create new areas of research towards real world outcomes.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A three-year bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline. Applicants without a degree but with substantial and recent relevant experience and who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Electronic Arts with a course weighted average of 70% may be permitted to enter the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Intermediate Awards I

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course appear below.

Course Organisation

The Master of Electronic Arts consists of three semesters of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study. Students take three compulsory core units in electronic and interactive arts, a research methods unit, three elective study units to further student'sown research area, and also five electronic art project units related to their specific goals in seeking a qualification in this course. These areas include; digital telecommunications, Internet connectivity, screen-based CD ROM publications, digital film, multimedia installations, intelligent architecture, smart products, robotics, telepresence systems, computer modelling of behaviour, remote sensing devices, cyberspace and virtual reality, artificial life, popular culture, sonic art, video art, project management and web design. Students' optional choices will be dependent on their prior qualifications and experience, and on their goals in undertaking the course. Over the three semesters, students undertake increasingly individualised and advanced work, with the expectation that their final-semester project will be of publishable or publicly usable standard.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course will be better equipped to pursue a career at the intersection of art, science and technology, through their practices in the field of developing and presenting electronic technologies in Australia and around the world. Graduates will have ongoing dialogue and contextualisation to represent the current states which informed new industrial developments.
