Introduction

This course is intended for those with an undergraduate degree or the equivalent in architecture, urban planning or landscape architecture wishing to extend their existing competencies and skills in the sphere of urban design. The program extends the Graduate Certificate which introduces theoretical concepts and practical methods of urban design. Students are able to understand processes of urban design and to develop skills and techniques of communicating three dimensional urban design. Briefing and guidance skills for implementing urban design proposals are developed. The course also aims to enhance professional skills through an understanding of the social, economic, physical, political and legal processes which influence the form and structure of urban areas. Research methods used in urban design are addressed and a forum is provided for exploration of contemporary urban design issues.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Architecture or Landscape Architecture or the equivalent in a combination of study and work experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This is a two semester course or the equivalent part-time. Students with a Graduate Certificate in Urban Design can complete the course in one semester.

Intermediate Awards I

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course appear below.

Course Organisation

The course is offered by a combination of lectures, studios and seminars.
