307075 v.1 Graduate Certificate in Anatomical Plastination

GradCertAnatomPlast(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 050726C
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 0.5 Years

Introduction

This course provides the theoretical background and practical skills to undertake detailed prosection and the two major types of anatomical plastination currently used. Whole-region and cross-sectional thin slice plastination techniques provide permanentanatomical specimens which do not require ongoing refrigeration or formalin preservation. They are safe to handle and can be easily transported and stored. Participants will learn how to set up a laboratory to undertake these two plastination techniques and complete the procedures using specimens they have prosected during the course. They will plan, in detail, setting up a plastination facility in their own workplace.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Undergraduate anatomical knowledge or relevant laboratory experience is required before commencement. Applicants without this knowledge or experience may be admitted to the course at the discretion of the Head of School, with completion of appropriate bridging units.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is one semester full-time study.

Course Organisation

Plastination takes about four months from the original specimen to the final plastinated form. Since some aspects of the process require daily intervention it will be a requirement to attend to the needs of the processes as necesary.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. All prosection and plastination equipment is supplied. Participants are required to provide their own protective clothing as advised upon enrolment.
