Introduction

This course provides higher education in the fields of fashion and textiles for allowing choice in a diverse range of career opportunities. The Departments of Design and Art collaborate in the presentation of this course ensuring that students develop the creative and technical skills necessary for an innovative approach to fashion and textiles with a focus on creative thinking. This course is based on an exploration of the relationships between textiles, garment and the body. The practices of research, analysis, ideation, production and communication are underpinned by the principles of both design and process and arts practice which are reflected in the project work undertaken. Fashion is strongly linked to culture and has a prominent place in the media. This course also provides a theoretical and contextual framework for understanding the cultural significance and practices within the fashion industry.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

In addition to meeting the University's usual entry requirements all applicants local and international are required to present to the School a folio of work and attend a personal interview.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This course is three years full-time study. Part-time study is only available with the prior approval of the course coordinator.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may enter national and international areas of the fashion and textile industry as producers and retailers, design entrepreneurs, freelance designers and consultants, journalists, stylists, photographers, illustrators, public relations, costume for theatre and film costumers and designers of surface and soft furnishings.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
