Syllabus: Electrical, magnetic and thermal properties of materials. Band theory of solids, conductors, insulators, semi conductors, intrinsic and extrinsic semi conductors, p-n junctions. Superconduction and the Hall effect. Photoconductivity and photoemission, masers and lasers. Dielectrics, ferroelectricity, dielectric strength, capacitance. Optical and molecular polarisability.
