Syllabus: The first industrial revolution - debates over the causes of the industrial revolution, the uniqueness of the British experience, industrialisation and class structure. Democracy - the fear of revolution, the Reform Acts, public education. Urbanisation -poverty and the poor law, public health, social reform movements. Professionalisation and the administrative revolution. Secularisation - anti-clericalism, science and religion, the churches and the working class, new ideologies and world views, plus a major research paper.
