Syllabus: Control of respiration, gaseous exchange and respiratory mechanics. Functions of blood, the formation of blood cells and the characteristics of red blood cells. Resistance of the body to infection. Immunity and allergy. The gastro-intestinal hormones, enzymes and nutrients. Gastrointestinal mobility. The electrophysiology and mechanical properties of the gastro-intestinal musculature, digestion and gastro-intestinal circulation. The digestion of carbohydrates, lipids, protein and vitamins. Formation of urine by the kidney, glomerular filtration and tubular function controlling mechanisms. An introduction to the principles of physical fitness, the physiological effects of activity and methods of fitness assessment. The physiology of the musculoskeletal system and muscles.
