300569 v.2 Master of Science (Mining Geology)

Introduction
This course is designed to appeal to the working geologist or recent graduate wishing to consolidate their professional qualifications in the mining industry on either a part-time or full-time basis. Mine geologists are an essential part of the mining production cycle, and thus less susceptible to the cyclical uncertainties often associated with mineral exploration. The profession spans traditional geology and mining engineering, and thus requires a unique blend of skills generally not provided by most geology postgraduate programs.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Four year undergraduate degree, with the award of a bachelors degree in engineering, a Graduate Diploma in Engineering or a Bachelor of Science degree with honours, or equivalent, in an appropriate field and at a better than average level of performance.Applicants with other qualifications and experience may only be admitted with the consent of the appropriate Senior Academic.

Duration and Availability
If studied on a full-time basis, the course extends over a minimum period of one calendar year, whereas part-time students will take at least two years to complete the course.

Course Organisation
The course requires a program of study consisting of - Course and Project units. Course units can be selected from - the full range available in the postgraduate diploma, including specialised units offered in the final two years of the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering degrees at the Western Australian School of Mines, but excluding any units previously taken as part of the postgraduate diploma or honours programs, and units offered specifically as part of the Master of Science (coursework) degree. Instruction in these special units may take the form of tutorials, together with supervised reading and practical work. Project units could involve both field and laboratory work related to the special units or units being taken. Students arerequired to submit a written report or dissertation.
