Introduction
This research course provides the opportunity for practising planners, architects and graduates of other disciplines such as geography, economics, social science, environmental science, engineering and surveying to develop a wider range of contemporary skills and knowledge, and an opportunity to apply these in project work or applied research. Course objectives include assisting the professions through the introduction of new expertise and perspectives and enhancing the career prospects of graduating students. The course is designed to accommodate individualised study programs to meet particular needs in areas such as - public finance, urban design, resource allocation, administration, management, and information technology and assist in relating these to the profession.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A bachelors degree in planning, architecture or a related discipline.

Duration and Availability
This research course is of two years full-time duration, but applicants with a postgraduate diploma, relevant honours degree, or equivalent qualifications and experience may be eligible for direct entry to the second year of the course. Part-time study is also available.

Course Organisation
This course is studied as a research degree. The course is based on an individualised study program, made up of applied research methods, planning seminar, optional units and an approved project thesis. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Postgraduate Coordinator, School of Architecture, Construction and Planning. Students without prior studies in research methods and statistical data analysis will be required to undertake relevant preparatory units. This will increasethe stated course duration.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note
It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive the Postgraduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
