177610 v.6 Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering)

Introduction
Mining engineers are responsible for the design, planning and operation of a mine. Management of underground mines is restricted to mining engineering graduates. These courses provide a comprehensive knowledge in a broad range of science and technology, including geology, electrical, civil and mechanical engineering, computing and environmental science, particularly those aspects concerned with conservation of the environment, health and safety, ventilation, pollution and management of people and resources.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
TEE Calculus, Applicable Mathematics and Physics.

Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and Q. A certificate of successful completion of an approved course in first aid is required before the degree will be awarded. During the course students are required to obtain a minimum of 12 weeks of approved industrial experience. A written report and a seminar must be presented based on this experience.

Note
Well qualified applicants lacking prerequistes may still be considered. The Associate Degree may be used as a pathway into the science course and science students may transfer to engineering after satisfactory performance at university.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
This course is of four years full-time duration, or equivalent part-time study. The first two years of this course are available at either the Bentley or Kalgoorlie Campuses. The final two professional years are only available at Kalgoorlie Campus.

Intermediate Awards
A student enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering who does not wish to complete the fourth year after three years, and who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Bachelor of Science (Mining) may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to the approval of the Senior Academic. For further definition refer to the Intermediate Awards Heading under General Information.

Professional Recognition
This course is recognised by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and is accredited by the Institution of Engineers, Australia. Graduates, after a set period of time in industry, can apply to the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, to sit for examinations qualifying them for an Underground Supervisors Certificate, Quarry Managers Certificate and for a Mine Managers Certificate of Competency.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
