177599 v.5 Bachelor of Arts

Introduction
This course is structured to allow students to identify individual special skills and interests during the first year, by engaging in a wide range of design experiences covering the major fields of design practice. Requires updating.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
None.

Specific Requirements
STAT elements considred are E and either V or Q.

Note
Alternative pathways are available for mature age students. Applicants may be required to present to the School a comprehensive folio of work and attend a personal interview with the teaching staff.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
This course is of three years full-time duration or equivalent part-time. While part-time studies are not discouraged, applicants are reminded that these programs make very great demands on student's time outside formal contact hours. A number of units are available in distance education mode.

Course Organisation
The common first year is highly multidisciplinary in order that students, new to design programs at this level, are able to achieve a conceptual view of what constitutes design process and product. In addition to creative studio activities, students are introduced to the technological knowledge and skill base of design and they undertake important introductory studies in the contextual, theoretical and historical aspects of design. In second and third year students follow their chief design interest by undertaking a major.

Professional Recognition
Graduates may convert student membership of the national professional design bodies into full professional membership after fulfilling specific conditions.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. All applicants to Schoolof Design programs must be prepared to meet a substantial portion of the course consumable costs chiefly in the personal purchase of design materials. The School provides as much basic material as possible but the highly varied nature of consumables and personal preferences of students does not allow it to meet all of these wider needs. All students are also required to own or have access to a 35mm single-lens reflex camera, either fully manual, or automatic with manual override. The School strongly recommends that students have access to a computer with software relevant to requirements of the course.

Special Note
Students who commenced prior to and who are continuing in this course or the Bachelor of ARts (Design Photography) from 2003 have the choice to graduate with either a Bachelor of Arts (Design), Bachelor of Arts (Design Photography) or Bachelor of Arts (major) award subject to approval by the Head of School.
