155907 v.3 Graduate Diploma in Applied Heritage Studies



Introduction
This course is designed to provide a profesional qualification enabling graduates to gain employment in areas such as museum work, the interpretation of historical sites, art galleries and historical research. Accordingly, this course provides training and experience in at least one of a number of specific fields of applied cultural heritage. Students are given the opportunity to enrich their heritage studies and/or methodological background, also completing a common core of units embracing museology, and the management and interpretation of historical places. In addition, students complete a major involving an applied research project in a specialist area, a placement in an institute relevant to that specialist area, an undergraduate unit in the specialist area, and two other cultural heritage units. Majors include - Public Programs, Art Curatorial, Museology, Heritage Site Management, and Public History.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Applicants must meet the University's standard entry requirements with an appropriate bachelors degree or equivalent.

Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is of one-year full-time duration and is also available on a part-time basis. All units for this course are also available through Distance Education with the exception of Heritage Studies 516.

Course Organisation
Students complete a specialism, involving an applied research project in a specialisation, one or two placements in an institution relevant to the specialisation, a graduate unit in the specialisation area, for example, history, education, art history and anthropology. Two other cultural heritage units are selected supporting the chosen specialisation. The sequence of units undertaken depends upon whether studying in internal or external mode.

Career Opportunities
This course is ideally suited to those wanting to develop professional skills in the cultural heritage area or those who, while already in the field, need professional qualifications for reasons of career development. Increasingly, institutions like museums and other heritage bodies require their employees to have professional qualifications in the cultural heritage field.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
