Introduction
Interior designers, as qualified professionals, find creative solutions to problems relating to the function and quality of people's built environment. Interior designers coordinate the design and construction of building interiors including commercial and retail office space, laboratories, intensive care units, computing areas, hotel and resort developments, theatres, as well as presentation environments for boutique and larger scale retailing, trade fairs, exhibitions, museums and gallery exhibitions and displays. Interior designers require skills and understanding in all aspects of design, combined with a technical knowledge of interior construction, equipment and building systems. They must also exercise ability in communication and administrative skills.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
None. Interview and portfolio may be required.

Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q.

Note
It is a requirement for completion that students undertake a minimum of 40 days approved work experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
This course is a full-time honours degree. Provided that the stipulated prerequisites and corequisites are fulfilled, enrolment on a part-time basis is permitted.

Professional Recognition
The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) admits graduates to the licentiateship after commencing professional practice and then to full associate membership after a submission of a professional folio of work.

Career Opportunities
Interior designers find employment as independant interior design consultants, within interior design practices, as facility managers for large corporations, within architectural firms or, in some instances, working for organisations specialising in specific areas such as lighting design or furniture design and in design education.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note
A Bachelor of Arts (Interior Architecture) will be awarded in the following classes depending on course weighted average for the final year of the four-year honours degree. Course weighted average, First Class 80% or more, Upper Second Class 75-79.9, Lower Second Class 70-74.9, Pass 50-69.9.
