125611 v.3 Graduate Certificate in Mining Geomechanics

Introduction
The course is especially designed for practising mining, civil and geological engineers and mine and engineering geologists. It is also designed to be a preliminary course for those intending to enter the Master of Engineering Science in Mining Geomechanics program without the required honours degree. The units offered deal with modern methodologies and the state of the art in mining and mine environmental geomechanics. Students may develop into geotechnical specialists or become well informed managers. Career paths for the geotechnical specialist include in-house specialists in mining and petroleum companies, consultants, academics, researchers, and technical specialists for mining related organisations.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A four year bachelors degree in engineering and two years of industrial experience, a degree in mining engineering and a Mine Managers Certificate of Competency, or a three year bachelors degree, or a one year Graduate Diploma in Mining and two years of industrial experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is designed to be a part-time course of one to two years. The mode of study is modular or block release type where students undertake four units (short courses) over an intensive three week period. Using this format four short courses can be undertaken and examined in the three week block. Only eight short course units will be offered in any calendar year.

Course Organisation
The course consists of 8 optional units. Optional units must be chosen in consultation with the Course Coordinator. Students with a high level of performance may apply to be transferred to the Master of Engineering Science (Mining Geomechanics).

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
