Syllabus:	It is clear in both contemporary academic and popular literature that there is considerable current interest in management systems in this part of the world. The major reason for this level of interest has been the high economic growth rates within the Asia-Pacific region in general and in particular in East and South-East Asia. The initial topics of this unit therefore discuss the concept of national competitiveness and comparative management systems, with a particular emphasis upon the role of culture in economic development and competitiveness. This serves as useful background to a later study of the particular management environments and practices in particular countries and cultural groupings of the region.
