Syllabus: The birth of India - nationalism and partition; Congress domination of politics; The emergency - the challenge to Indian democracy; Sikh separatism and the threat to a unified India; India, Pakistan and Kashmir problem; Hindu-Muslim tension and conflict;Globilisation and economic liberalism - the transformation of India; The rise of the backward castes and the Dalit struggle. This unit can be taken in both the Anthropology and History discipline majors.
