Syllabus: This unit encourages students to explore and reflect upon the role of the midwife from an historical perspective as well as considering present and future developments. Opportunity is provided to explore what it means to be a midwife in an era of cultural and social change. Students will analyse trends in midwifery practice, education and research and relate these to the midwife's role in the care of childbearing women in contemporary Australian health care settings. Through this exploration students will become more aware of the community's understanding of midwifery, as well as developing personal views about childbearing and midwifery practice.
