Syllabus: This unit is designed to further your theoretical knowledge and practical skills in medical microbiology, particularly as undertaken for the diagnosis of infectious disease but also for research in associated fields. Medically significant bacteria will be examined - their pathogenesis and laboratory features. Fungi of medical significance - their classification, laboratory detection, isolation identification and treatment of infection. Parasites of human significance - their classification, epidemiology, diseases caused and laboratory detection. Virus structure and function, vial infections and their laboratory diagnosis.
