Prerequisite(s): 309275 (v.1) Ed 136 - Introduction to the English and Mathematics Learning Areas or any previous version
Syllabus: An examination of a range of historical and theoretical perspectives underpinning teaching and learning of English in primary schools. There is a particular focus on the role of writing as a social construct, and on building understandings and knowledge about language and how it works. Students will study a wide range of texts written by children and gain insights into the acquisition of literacy skills, the features of different writing forms and the processes involved in writing, such as planning and revision. Progress maps, diagnostic instruments, intervention programs and resources are examined. Opportunities are also provided for the practical application of a repertoire of writing strategies and instructional practices that are suitable for teaching English in primary schools. For example, at the word level students will consider and evaluate a range of teaching strategies for teaching spelling, word study, phonics and phonemic awareness. At the whole text level students will examine and implementa range of general strategies for teaching written genres using the conventions of Standard Australian English in a variety of contexts for a range of audiences.
