Prerequisite(s): 303154 (v.3) WASM Mining Geomechanics 331 or any previous version
Syllabus: Three research or design projects in engineering soil mechanics will be undertaken covering tailings dams, mine back fill and soil slope stability. The unit controller may consider other topics as well. The work involves developing and writing a proposal for each study, undertaking a literature search and a summary of the search, performing the work and writing each study up in the form of a formal professional engineering report. Lectures and seminars will be arranged from experts in the field from time to time and attendance is mandatory. Students are required to attend a mining geomechanics field trip to hone skills in geotechnical core logging, face mapping and data analysis. Satisfactory completion of this field trip component is a mandatory requirement for completion of the unit.
