Tutorial: 1 x 1.5 Hours Weekly
Syllabus: This skills-based unit explores in-depth the therapeutic relationship in terms of construction/co-construction of meaning and power relations, considering gender, class, race and culture. The sociopolitical dimensions to diagnosis are also critically analysed in terms of the construction of social identities. As well, a comprehensive and critical study of the common factors in practice that contribute towards the successful outcome of therapy is considered. Attention is given to current understandings ofthe notion of empathy and their relevance to the therapeutic relationship. Through consideration of the above dimensions and factors, together with their knowledge of different therapeutic approaches, students are encouraged to develop their reflective, reflexive and critical thinking in order to inform their own therapeutic practice and style of engagement with clients, and creatively constitute their unique therapeutic 'toolbox'.
