Introduction

This course, offered in collaboration by the University of Western Australia and Curtin University of Technology, is for professionals from the field of architecture, landscape architecture, planning or a relevant discipline who wish to supplement their work with an urban design sensibility or specialised orientation to urban design issues. The course is designed to build knowledge about urban design and development processes (with a focus on the Australian and South East Asian contexts), improve techniques of urban analysis, design and community engagement, and strengthen inter-disciplinary approaches and the co-ordination of architectural, landscape and planning objectives in urban development.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

The Graduate Diploma in Urban Design is open to applicants with an undergraduate degree in architecture, landscape architecture, planning or a relevant field. Candidates who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Urban Design with a course wieghted average of 60% are eligible to apply. An interview and examples of student and or professional work may also be requested.

Recognition of Prior Learning

No recognition of prior learning is generally awarded but students may make application to substitute alternative optional units of 25 credits value.

Duration and Availability

This course is one year full-time or four years part-time duration, available for entry in either semester one or semester two.

Intermediate Awards 1

A student who has completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval from the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

Course Organisation

The main activity of the course takes place in the design studio where students have the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and instruction in specific technical areas of urban design to current projects, engaging with government agencies and community groups to develop practical solutions to significant design and development challenges. Optional units ensure that all students gain an understanding and appreciation of the central disciplines of urban design - architecture, planning and landscape architecture. Optional units will be selected according to the student's background and must be approved by the Course Co-ordinator.

Career Opportunities

The principal employment destinations for graduates will be State and Local Government planning departments and private consulting practices.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
