Introduction

This course is designed for graduates of architecture, landscape architecture, planning or a related field seeking to conduct independent research in urban design at an advanced level. The course is designed to build knowledge through design research about urban design and urban development processes (with a focus on the Australian and South East Asian contexts), improve techniques of urban analysis, design and community engagement, and strengthen inter-disciplinary approaches and the coordination of architectural, landscape and planning objectives in urban development. The course structure offers opportunity for independent research in urban design at an advanced level, expanding the body of research on issues of the contemporary city and the design applications of research findings.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Applicants must hold a bachelor degree with honours in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning or a related field. Applicants without an honours degree or equivalent demonstration of research ability are required to first complete a preliminary semester. Applicants from a non-design background are required to show evidence of skills through submission of a design portfolio or may be required to undertake preliminary units to acquire adequate design skills.

No recognition of prior learning is awarded for this course.

Duration and Availability

The course is two year full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

The course consists of an individually selected and developed thesis, the progress of which will be monitored through regular discussion with an appointed supervisor. Students may elect optional coursework units in which general theoretical concepts are critically examined.

Career Opportunities

The principal employment destinations for graduates will be State and Local Government planning departments and private consulting practices. Graduates may also proceed to doctoral studies in preparation for an academic career.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

Special Note

It is a requirement that a minimum two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and maximum one-third by coursework.
