Introduction

This course provides a balance between broad-based core knowledge and professional and practical skills. Core studies cover the fundamentals of scientific and management knowledge. The discipline studies combine each of these two areas and require the application of theoretical studies to develop a skilled and proficient approach to the management of health and safety concerns. The course may be of particular interest to those with previous qualifications and work experience in health and safety intending to complete a degree level course. Graduates are typically employed in industry or government positions.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

In addition to the usual entrance requirements it is recommended that students have studied TEE Mathematics and a TEE Science.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The course is available in internal and external study modes. International onshore students on student visa's are not permitted to undertake this course externally.

Course Organisation

In the first year, students are introduced to core science units, including physics, chemistry and human biology. In second and third year the course emphasises specialised health and safety units which include occupational health, risk assessment, risk control and management, safety technology, occupational hygiene, toxicology, occupational safety and health management and ergonomics. Professional placements and tutorials with Health and Safety Practitioners will be offered during second and third year of the course. This course covers environmental health specialisation and occupational safety and health management.

Professional Recognition

Eligible for membership with the Safety Institute of Australia (not required to practice profession). Eligible for membership with the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (U.K.) (not required to practice profession).

Career Opportunities

The field of Occupational Safety and Health has undergone significant changes during the recent past, which requires the attention of highly qualified and conceptually proficient professionals. Very good prospects exist in a wide range of private companies and government departments and organisations as safety advisers, trainers, researchers and risk managers. Many graduates also find work interstate or overseas.
