Introduction

Multimedia design is the creative integration of images, sounds, text, animation, and interactivity, and commonly finds expression in areas such as animation, game design, Internet, motion graphics and three-dimensional modelling and rendering. By creative experimentation with concepts, aesthetics and media techniques, multimedia designers produce designed experiences for purposes such as education and training, entertainment, commerce and cultural enrichment. Through project-based learning, students will explore innovative ways to put ideas into practice while developing abilities, skills and competencies in all aspects of multimedia design. They will also discover the broader contexts of multimedia and related design fields through practice and critical analysis. The course encourages students to explore their own interests by selecting from a range of core, optional and elective units. In determining their own study program, students will develop a broader outlook, gain practical strength and learn to thrive in multimedia designs fast-changing social and technological environment.

Specific Requirements

Applicants are required to undertake the Portfolio/Interview process, as described in the Multimedia Design Application Kit. All applicants should contact Faculty of BEAD (Built Environment, Art and Design), Student Services (08) 9266 4061 by the end of September for a kit. Portfolios will take some time to prepare, and must be submitted by the end of November. Some applicants will be invited to attend interviews in December. This process allows the applicant to demonstrate relevant skills and aptitudes for success in this course. Recognition of Prior Learning is also assessed at this time. STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q.

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This course is three years full-time study. While part-time studies are not discouraged, applicants are reminded that these programs make very great demands on a student's time outside formal contact hours. A number of units are available in distance education mode. The course itself may not be available either solely internally or externally but individual units may be offered in either or both of these modes. Prospective students should contact the course coordinator for further information.

Professional Recognition

As a newly emerging area, multimedia design does not have a single traditional or legislative professional membership or accreditation body. However, practitioners are currently accepted into a variety of allied fields' professional associations, including SIGGRAPH (internationally), Australian Interactive Multimedia Industry Association (nationally), Australian Graphic Designers' Association (nationally) and Media Space (locally).

Career Opportunities

Commerce - website designs, e-commerce, marketing and advertising. Entertainment - special effects, three-dimensional visualisation, three-dimensional animation and cell animation, motion graphics in television and games. Science - scientific visualisation. Art - art and cultural research and expression, public art installations; criticism and consultancy. Education - online and distance education packages, interactive museum exhibition design, curriculum and training packages. Academic - postgraduate and further studies and research.

Additional Course Expenses

All applicants to Department of Design programs must be prepared to meet a substantial portion of the courses consumable cost's (chiefly in the personal purchase of design materials). The department provides as much basic material as possible, but the highly varied nature of consumables and personal preferences of students does not allow it to meet all of these wider needs. All students are also required to own or have access to a camera with a manual override for focus and exposure. The department strongly recommends that students have access to a computer with software relevant to requirements of the course. Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

Further Information

Students may be eligible for student membership of the Design Institute of Australia (Western Australian Chapter). While part-time studies are not discouraged, applicants are reminded that these programs make very great demands on students' time outside formal contact hours. A number of units may be available in Distance Education mode.
