Syllabus: Explores current issues and influences in the social construction of literacy in and out of schools. The course has two sections. In the first section there will be a focus on the values, beliefs, and world views that underpin literacy and the institutional rituals and practices that serve or marginalise particular social or cultural groups in schools. Issues such as the differences between socially constructed literacy practices valued by schools and those practices used by children from diverse backgrounds will be described, analysed and compared and their impact on the classroom and learning will be investigated. The second section will examine the development of designs for learning based on multiliteracies frameworks as a response to changes in technology, work, visual communication, diversity and social mobility.
