Syllabus: Provides opportunities for students to develop primary literacy intervention programs based on the understanding that all children should have equal access to effective literacy skills. The syllabus includes the investigation of successful literacy interventions that depend on a number of factors including the accurate identification of children's reading and writing difficulties, the recognition of the importance of developing sound home-school relationships, the implementation of whole school planning to ensure there is continuity of instruction and the establishment of a supportive learning community in the classroom. The development and the implementation of a range of diagnostic assessments and intervention strategies in the mainstream classroom areexplored. There will be a particular focus on developing understandings about the complex interaction of linguistic, social, cultural, cognitive, behavioural and physical differences in the acquisition of written and spoken language and literacy and the development practices that can be adapted to meet the needs of individual students who are not demonstrating successful literacy development in mainstream primary classrooms.
