Syllabus: Advantages of electron microscopy, interaction of electrons with solids, basic design of the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Modes of operation of a TEM. Basic designs of the scanning electron microscope and the electron probe micro analyser, detectors. Signal processing - x-ray analysis, wavelength and energy dispersive spectrometers, x-ray mapping.
