Introduction

This course (delivered in cooperation with The University of Western Australia) is designed for those participating in an accredited training program of a recognised industry partner to meet their education and training needs. The course aims to provide supervised Public Health practice within an academic framework that is both distinct from and complementary to existing diplomas, masters and PhD qualifications in Public Health. The GDPHPwill be awarded on the basis of field competence gained through a system of supervised rotational placements. It is anticipated that graduates will have gained significant employment market advantages.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements applicants must posses a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate field from a recognised tertiary institution. Full-time or part-time employment in the health sector, and evidence of acceptance into the accredited training program of a recognised industry partner.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This course is scheduled to commence in January 2006, following final University approval. This fee paying course is two years part-time, external study, (in-service learning).

Course Organisation

This course (delivered in collaboration with Curtin University and The University of WA) is designed for those participating in an accredited training program of a recognised industry partner to meet their education and training needs. The course is based on in-service learning within a rigorous academic framework. It consists of eight units based on identified competency areas which include - professional practice policy and leadership, management communication and leadership, epidemiology and biostatistics information management, health care evaluation, health promotion, infectious diseases, risk assessment/management and health economics.

Professional Recognition

This course will train public health practitioners to industry requirements using apprenticeship-style attachments similar to the long standing approach to professional education and training taken in clinical medicine, dentistry and other health care professions. It will meet an immediate need in so far as it will ensure high academic standards and provide accreditation for the Western Australian Public Health Training Program.

Career Opportunities

Graduates generally find employment with government, statutory authorities and non-government health agencies.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.
