Introduction

This double degree in Communication and Cultural Studies, and Art explores Australian culture and society, past and present and issues of national identity, indigeneity, interculturalism and multiculturalism, Australia in the global context, and Australia as a nation, combined with the application of contemporary art theories to particular texts, genres, periods and topics with the conceptualising, observing and analysing of visual information and developing this information into coherent visual form either through production of material-based artworks, performance or electronic arts.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

TEE English or English Literature, minimum scaled mark of 60 desirable. Folio presentation and interview may be required.

Note

Applicants may be required to produce evidence of special aptitude and creative skills to the Department of Art. Students will normally be expected to have attained a higher Tertiary Entrance Rank than is required for both single degrees.

Duration and Availability

This course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

Students undertake one major in Australian and Intercultural Studies, Creative Writing, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Literary Studies, Performance Studies, Professional Writing and Presentation or Publishing Practice with the major in Art. Fifty per cent of units are taken in the Department of Communication and Cultural Studies and the other half in the School of Art. In the Communication and Cultural Studies Majors, students take six compulsory core units, a major of eight full units and in their fourth year, two full units of recommended electives drawn from the offerings taught within the School of Communication and Cultural Studies. In the Art Major, students take six full units in Visual Culture whilst completing six full units in Visual Research over the first three years of the program. In the fourth year students will complete four full units in studio through completion of their individual studio projects.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. Some units within this course may have a field component, for which costs may be incurred.
