Introduction

This honours course provides suitably qualified students with the opportunity to undertake a dissertation based program in the field of Asian Studies. It emphasises independent research and the analysis of advanced problems in the theory and practice of a specific discipline or in the multidisciplinary approach to a topic, and requires the completion of a dissertation. The program builds on the Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies) course, allowing the development of a research topic using Asian language skills and further coursework in an Asian language - Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese or Asian Studies.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Refer to Admission into Honours Degree Programs and Regulations for Honours Degrees (General Information section). Those eligible to apply for places in the program are students with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies at Curtin with a course weighted average of at least 70 percent in units taken in the last two years of their course. Students with similar academic experience and levels of attainment, either at Curtin or from elsewhere may also apply. Prospective students may be advised of appropriate units to include in the final year of their basic degree.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This course is of two semesters full-time or equivalent part-time and/or external study.

Course Organisation

Students may be required to participate in research during inter-semester breaks.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.

NB Students who do not have a strong background in research methods are required to undertake an appropriate 25 credit unit in research methodology in place of one 25 credit elective unit.
