Introduction

This course is designed to prepare registered nurses for their nursing role in the care of older people across a range of clinical settings, within a wellness to illness. Key elements of the curriculum are critical thinking, professional accountability, gerontology assessment skills, evidenced based practice and competence to practice. To provide for the development of competency in clinical decision making and clinical judgement the curriculum includes a preceptored practicum.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Prospective students must be a nurse registered in division 1, Western Australia with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or its equivalent. Alternate mode of entry will be offered to nurses registered in division 1 with the Nurses Board, but without an undergraduate degree. Non-degree applicants must meet the School of Nursing and Midwifery's criteria for alternate entry. International applicants must be registered in division 1 with the Nurses Board of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Science Degree orits equivalent and meet the English competency as per the university entrance requirements.

Note

Prospective students are advised that a police clearance may be required for students in specific courses offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Students may also be required to have current competency in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The fee-paying course is one semester full time or part time equivalent.

Course Organisation

Students will complete the clinical practice unit in an approved clinical setting under the preceptorship of an experienced gerontological nurse.

Career Opportunities

Graduates find work within residential aged care providers, within aged care units in hospitals or rehabilitation centres, and in community centres.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.
