Introduction

This course allows disciplinary and interdisciplinary offerings in the areas, Australian and Intercultural Studies - Australian culture and society from intercultural comparative perspectives. Communication and Cultural Studies - the theoretical base andpractices of either film or journalism studies in a cultural studies context. Creative Writing - the theoretical base and practices of creative writing. Cultural Studies - contemporary cultural theories. Gender Studies - understanding of gender and sexuality. Literary Studies - how literary texts articulate cultural values. Professional writing - professional communicators in a wide range of fields, the meanings these have in cultures. Performance Studies - the practice, history and theory of theatre. Publishing Practice - skills, roles and contexts of publishing.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

TEE English or English Literature, minimum scaled mark of 60 desirable. Folio presentation and interview may be required.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

The course structure enables the combination of a variety of major and minor sequences relevant to a wide range of employment opportunities and to further study. The following discipline majors are available - Australian and Intercultural Studies, Creative Writing, Communication and Cultural Studies (Film and Journalism Studies), Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Literary Studies, Performance Studies, Professional Writing and Presentation, and Publishing Practice. Students select one or two majors, one of which must be a discipline major. Students may undertake up to six units from outside the Department of Communication and Cultural Studies. Those studying majors outside of the Department may also with approval undertake an additional two units. Any units undertaken outside the Department must, in addition to the approval of the area teaching the unit, also be approved by the Department. Those students undertaking the Film Studies stream or Journalism Studies stream within the Communication and CulturalStudies Major, may undertake the eight units in this major outside the Department, but can not take any further units outside of the Department.

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.
