Syllabus: Factors controlling ground behaviour in underground mines. Excavation geometry and stability. Strength of jointed rock masses. Strength versus stress in fractured rock mass. Overall mine sequencing strategies. Effects of blasting on stability. Determination of pillar strength and pillar design. Empirical stope design. Design validation and dilution control. Literature study assignment.
