Molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Molecular basis of disease. Recombinant DNA technology in medicine - cloning, sequencing and synthesis, gene probes as diagnostic reagents and DNA fingerprinting, polymerase chain reaction in clinical diagnostics, human pharmaceuticals - microbes, protein engineering, designer drugs, recombinant vaccines. Transgenics and gene therapy, social and legal aspects. Consists of five topics which examine techniques used in Biotechnology. The five topics are - enzymes, vectors and applications, southern blotting and applications, polymerase chain reaction and applications - genetic libraries, construction, use and identification of clones including sequencing and use of radioactive substances.
