A survey of Japanese civilisation down to the 19th century. Broad socio economic, technological, political, institutional and cultural developments, focusing on analysis of such developments as the ancient clan state and the importation of Chinese civilisation, the rise of feudalism, late feudal absolutism and Japan's relations with other countries, plus a major research paper.
