Radiographic positioning and terminology for the extremities. Introduction to x-rays, medical images and their production. Factors effecting x-ray absorption. Exposure factors effecting the image. Optical density, contrast, fog. Magnification, unsharpness, resolution. Recording the image: films and screens. Latent image. Manual and automatic processing. The chemistry of developing and fixing. Quality assurance. Scatter radiation and methods for limiting its effects. Sensitometry, speed, latitude and characteristic curves. Experimental construction of characteristic curves. Image quality. Copying radiographs, subtraction.
