Introduction
This course attracts students from a wide variety of professions and industries who are practising or intending to provide occupational health and safety, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, physical education or human movement graduates, environmental health officers, teachers, engineers and chemists. The course is recognised by several professional bodies including the Australian College of Occupational Medicine. Upon successful completion of the postgraduate diploma, students may apply for admission into the Master of Occupational Heath and Safety, Master of Science (Health Sciences) or the Master of Public Health. The postgraduate diploma comprises the first year of the two year Masters program.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A relevant bachelors degree from a recognised institution. Candidates with degree equivalent qualifications may be considered, particularly if already employed, or experienced in occupational health and safety.

Specific Requirements
Evidence of completion of an approved certificate in senior first aid is required before the course can be awarded. Applicants for this course should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is four semesters part-time study principally conducted on an external basis, some optional units are available in internal mode. Full-time study is available if required.

Intermediate Awards
A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School. Course Organisation
There are two streams - a management stream for those with occupational health and safety experience or aiming towards a management career in occupational health and safety, and a technical stream for those who are new to the profession intending to develop knowledge and skills in occupational health and safety. Each stream consists of core units followed by a selection from a range of optional units. The optional units provide the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of occupational health and safety. All units are offered in Distance Education mode, with some units requiring attendance at an on-campus session of up to one week.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
